Road Rovers Extreme/Cruisin’ Canines Crossover Pt. 1 “No Time Like the Present” Co-written by: Chris Chestnut and Kevin Bryan October 14, 2000. At a small school in New Mexico, specifically at Shepherd University (the secret headquarters of Extreme), an alarm is blaring. Inside the conference room, the Master is patiently awaiting his students. He’s wearing his usual outfit: dress pants, dress shirt and lab coat. He’s got white hair and glowing white eyes (thanks to cool special effects). He’s also holding a small remote control. A few moments later, Jolt, Roughhouse, Jamboree, Blaze, Domino, Tripper, Krystal, and Heatwave arrive and sit down around the large central table. They are each in their uniforms, which are blue with a lighter shade of blue and red trim. With the exceptions of Domino and Blaze, they are all human. Domino is a Dalmatian cano-sapien, and Blaze is a golden-retriever cano-mutant. Blaze has a bit of unique coloring, however. His fur is tinged with orange, and his ears, the tip of his tail, and under his chin are yellow. “What’s up, Master? We were just about to watch some wrestling,” Blaze asked. “Well, I’m afraid you’ll have to tape it. I’ve got some disturbing news. Take a look at this security footage.” The Master hits a button on his remote control and a series of monitors set into the far wall flicker to life. A black and white video begins to play. A male cano-sapien is walking into a large lab. He proceeds to destroy most of it, taking only a few choice items before turning towards the camera. From this angle, they can see that he is a German shepherd, with a black patch over his left eye. They instantly recognize him. “Von Erich?! That jerk is still alive? I thought he died in that explosion in space!” Heatwave exclaimed. “It appears that he somehow survived and made it back to Earth. And the bad news doesn’t end there. The parts that were stolen from this lab were the same parts required to build Parvo’s time machine.” “So he’s trying to find a way to travel through time?” Jamboree asked as she rolled up the sleeves on her oversized jacket. “But why would he wanna do that?” Jolt asked. He had a worried expression on his face. And for good reason. Last time he faced Von Erich, he was nearly killed. The Master presses a button on the control and a map comes up on the monitors. “That’s a good question. Our spy satellites tracked him to a remote area of Montana. Hopefully, we won’t be too late to stop him.” “All right, guys! Let’s take it to the Extreme!” Blaze cried as he ran out of the room and down the hall. The others follow, less enthusiastic about the coming battle. They watch Blaze run on towards the hangar. “Honestly,” Roughhouse sighed, “he gets way to worked up over this stuff.” “Definitely,” Domino added. “You’d think he’d be a little worried at least. After all, Von Erich was the one who made him a cano-mutant.” Tripper is walking more slowly than the others are. She is nervously playing with the crossbow that is strapped to her left arm. Jolt glances at his sister, and notices her worried expression. “What’s wrong?” “Last time we fought Von Erich he did something to my powers. He amplified them somehow. I ended up scattering us all across Earth.” “Don’t worry, everything will be fine.” Jamboree glances back at Jolt and blinks, a look of surprise on her face. “Jolt? Being optimistic? This is a pleasant change.” “Well, I recently realized that life is too short to wasted it by worrying and thinking too much.” From down the hall, Blaze calls out to the others. “Hey, you guys comin’ or what?” ---- In a remote area of Montana, Von Erich is finishing the final preparations on his time machine in his hideout, which is inside a cave. The time machine is a large platform with rails surrounding most of it, except for the entrance. Von Erich is wearing his usual black outfit with red trim, except without the jacket. He is working furiously on a small box on the right of the time machine. He talks to himself as he works. “Finally, I’ll be able to get my revenge. It’s been months since the Road Rovers and Extreme defeated me in space. Using my powers I was able to survive and return to earth. But my army was destroyed. Fortunately, I happened to stumble upon one of Parvo’s old bases, and discovered the plans for this time machine. Now, I’ll be able to destroy the Rovers before they are even created!” He finishes making adjustments and closes the panel. A control panel nearby comes to life. He walks over to the panel and picks up a small device, which he then attaches to his wrist. He then pulls on his black jacket. The jacket has gold buttons and a black cape, which is attached to the left shoulder. It only flows down to his tail. “Excellent! Everything is ready. I just need to set the coordinates. . .Wait! Instead of going into the past, why don’t I go into the future? Of course! The Rovers have pure canine DNA, so they’ll probably age fairly quickly. So if I go into the future, I can enjoy my revenge even more, because then they will know why I killed them! Haha!” He continues to laugh maniacally as he sets the controls for the year 2010. He suddenly pauses. “Ahh, how could I forget! Those pesky kids in Extreme will be at the prime of their lives. Even if there aren’t any Rovers, they’ll still be around. I better set the controls a little farther ahead.” He resets the program, and then sets the control for the year 2029. Suddenly, an alarm blares through the compound. Von Erich goes over to another panel, and presses a few buttons. A screen flickers to life, and on it, we can see Extreme crashing through his security. “Blast! They’ll be here soon. I have to leave now!” Von Erich steps onto the time platform, as the computer begins the process. A yellow glow surrounds him, and then he fades from view. . . ---- October 14, 2029. The Cruisin’ Canines are relaxing at their headquarters, which is an updated version of the former headquarters of the original Road Rovers. White Fang, a Malamute, sits at a large table playing cards with Jack, a Jack Russell, and Shepard Jones, a German Shepherd. Kinssin, a Pug, is sitting cross-legged, meditating in the corner, and Arelene, an Airedale Terrier, is reading a book on the couch. A door on the one wall of the room slides open, and Charles A. Wolfe enters. He is carrying a folder and has a worried expression on his face. “Heads up, guys, we’ve got trouble!” “What is it, Master?” White Fang asks as he quickly abandons his cards. “It’s a temporal spike. Someone is using time travel. It’s located in Montana. Go check it out!” They answer in unison: “Yes, sir!” ---- Elsewhere in the year 2029, Del and the Devil Dawgs are “relaxing” at their own hideout. “I do not have bug eyes, man! Stand still so I can pound you, Cantos!” raged Poco, a Chihuahua, as he takes a boxing stance. He hops all around Cantos, an Irish Wolfhound, with his fists clenched. “No way!” Cantos, an Irish Wolfhound, replied. “You’ll have to catch me first.” Cantos takes off at super speeds as Poco hops after him trying to land a decent blow. There isn’t much room to move, since the room they are occupying is filled with observation equipment and tracking system. It was only one such room in the Rocky Mountain headquarters of the Devil Dawgs. Del, a Dalmatian, comes into the room, followed by Kuros, a black pug and Kinssin’s brother, and Wendy, a Welsh Terrier. “KNOCK IT OFF!!!” Del yelled. Both Poco and Cantos quickly stop their little dance, and line up in front of Del. “Sorry, Master Del…” Poco said, as he saluted Del. “Nevermind, we have more important things to worry about. There’s been a temporal spike in Montana,” Del informed them. “A time traveler?” Wendy asked. “Exactly,” Del told her. “If we can get a hold of them or whatever lets them time travel, we can use that power to go back in time and conquer the world!” “Sounds like a plan. I’ll teleport us there,” Wendy said. ---- Von Erich was just shaking off the effects of his jump through time. He glanced at the device attached to his wrist. “I made it! It’s 2029!” He looks at his surroundings. It’s the same spot where his time machine used to be, but now his hideout is flattened. There’s nothing left. “My hideout! My machine! It’s all gone. Extreme must have destroyed it after I left. . .But if my machine is gone, how can I get back?” “Well, hello there.” Von Erich turns to see a group of cano-sapiens standing nearby. They consist of a Dalmatian, an Irish Wolfhound, a Chihuahua, a Welsh Terrier, and a black pug. Von Erich looks disgusted. “Let me guess. . .you’re the Road Rovers?” “Not hardly. The Road Rovers died a long time ago. My name is Del and these guys are the Devil Dawgs.” “Oh really...” “And who, may I ask, are you?” “My name is Von Erich. I’ve come from the turn of the century to take over.” “Good luck,” Wendy said, mockingly. “The Cruisin’ Canines will probably make short work of one lone German shepherd.” “Whoever they are, they won’t be a match for my psychic powers. You say the Road Rovers are dead? What about Extreme?” Von Erich asked. “Who?” asked Poco, as all the Devil Dawgs looked at each other, as if to say, ‘Do you know who or what he is talking about?’ “Extreme. The team of mutants that works with the Road Rovers?” “Never heard of ‘em,” Del said. “Musta been before my time.” “Interesting...Well, Del, since we seem to be on the same side, why don’t we form an alliance?” “Why should I trust you?” Del asked, looking at Von Erich suspiciously. “Because, my friend, I dream of creating a world were our kind rules supreme. I came fairly close to achieving that dream, but Extreme and the Road Rovers stopped me. But with them gone, nothing can stand in my way!” Another voice from behind them calls, “Wanna bet?” Von Erich and the Devil Dawgs turn towards the voice, only to come face to face with the Cruisin’ Canines. “That German shepherd must be our time traveler,” Shepard Jones said. “Tell me, Del,” Von Erich said, “are these the ‘Cruisin’ Canines’ you referred to?” “That would be us!” Jack called. “Devil Dawgs! Deal with this!” “With pleasure, Master Del!” Poco cried as they advanced towards the Cruisin’ Canines. “Let’s rock,” smiled Jack as he prepared to do battle. ---- October 14, 2000. Extreme has just entered the room containing the time machine. They look around and spot the controls for the time machine, but no Von Erich. “I don’t see anyone,” Jolt said. “Looks like we either beat him home, or we were too late.” “Bummer, I was hoping for some action...,” Blaze whined. “Well, I think we should all be thankful that he isn’t here. It took everything we had to take him down last time,” Domino said. “No kidding. Should we trash the time machine?” Krystal asked. “Well, the Master said to destroy it, but what if Von Erich’s gone through already?” Roughhouse goes over to the controls. She hits a few buttons as she tries to call up the program. “I don’t see any destination programmed in. If he did use it, it must have automatically reset itself. We can’t follow him without risking getting lost.” “So we blow it up?” Heatwave asked. “I guess so...,” Jamboree said, though she sounded a bit unsure. Heatwave, however, didn’t need to ask twice. He builds up a charge of energy, then releases it from his hands in a beam directed at the time machine. It bangs the machine up, but doesn’t destroy it. Jamboree sighs. “Stand aside, amateur. Let the queen of demolitions handle this.” Jamboree holds her hands out towards the machine. Sparks fly around her hands and eyes, and then the machine explodes. “Nice work...,” Tripper said. “I hope we don’t regret this later, though...” “All right, mission accomplished. Let’s go home,” Jolt said. They turn to go, but Tripper lingers a moment behind the others. Jolt turns and notices. “Something wrong?” “We didn’t destroy the control panel for the time machine.” “You wanna do the honors?” “Why not?” Tripper creates an “arrow” of green energy in one hand. She walks over to the control panel and stabs the arrow down into it. Suddenly, energy courses over her. She screams as the energy builds. Jolt and the others turn back to help her, but it’s too late. A portal opens and Tripper disappears through it. ---- October 14, 2029. The Cruisin’ Canines and the Devil Dawgs are just about to throw down, when a portal of green light appears between them. Before anyone can react, it spits Tripper out onto the ground. “What the...,” Kinssin started to ask, but before he can finish, he and the other Cruisin’ Canines are pulled through. The portal disappears, leaving an unconscious Tripper behind. Von Erich instantly recognizes her. “Who’s she?” Del asked, a bit surprised. “She is a member of Extreme. Somehow, her powers must have mutated or interacted with my machine, perhaps.” He glances down at the contraption on his wrist. It’s no longer functioning. “No! My time machine has been destroyed!” “How do you know?” Poco asked. “This wristband is designed so that I can activate the machine from wherever I am. It was set to respond to today’s date in the year 2000 so that I could go back to the exact moment that I left. It’s no longer responding, which means that the machine has been destroyed. I would change the setting, but the machine wasn’t operable before October 14.” “So it’s no longer possible to return to the past?” Del asked. Von Erich walks over to inspect the unconscious Tripper. He kneels down and checks her pulse. “On the contrary, Del. It’s very possible.” He looks up at Del. “Let’s make a deal...” ---- October 14, 2000. A large green portal has opened in Von Erich’s hideout. The members of Extreme watch with great anticipation. “Is it Tripper?” Krystal asked. The Cruisin’ Canines shimmer into view before them. They glance around them before their eyes settle on Extreme. Extreme stares back at them. “Where are we?” Kinssin asked. “I’m not sure, but I’m willing to bet that they’re responsible!” White Fang said. Extreme is having a similar reaction to the Cruisin’ Canines. “I’ll bet they were left behind as a trap!” Heatwave exclaimed. “Von Erich was ready for us!” Jolt looks a little unsure, but Blaze seems to believe Heatwave. “Look, they’re cano-sapiens, and they aren’t Road Rovers. That must mean they’re with Von Erich!” Heatwave said. Before any of the other team members can do anything, Heatwave fires a blast of energy at the Cruisin’ Canines from his hands. But White Fang is more than ready for a fight. He uses his own ice powers to encase Heatwave in a block of ice. “That tears it!” Shepard cries as he charges towards Domino at super speeds. Domino uses his power to enhance probability, and a rock suddenly falls from the ceiling of the cavern, forcing Shepard to change directions. He isn’t paying attention, and he slams right into a wall of crystals, courtesy of Krystal. “These kids are pretty good,” Arelene said. “But not good enough!” She leaps across the room and behind Roughhouse. She attempts to drop kick her, but Roughhouse is too quick. She grabs Arelene’s foot and hurls her toward the far wall. Instead of crashing into it though, Arelene springs off of it, heading back towards a surprised Roughhouse. Still using most of the momentum from the throw, she nails Roughhouse with another drop kick, sending Roughhouse flying across the room. Meanwhile, Kinssin uses his power of fiery, Chinese Dragon around himself, hoping to both shield himself from Blaze’s fiery attack, and to scare him. “Ooh, scary,” Blaze said sarcastically. He starts to attack again, when suddenly he gets hit by a blaster from the stealthy Jack. He falls to the ground, stunned. This is getting ridiculous! Jolt thought to himself, and there’s no sign of Tripper! Suddenly, Kinssin tackles him, throwing both of them to the floor. Jolt uses his powers to shock him, but Kinssin hangs on. “Let go, already! Who the heck do you thing you are?” “We’re the Cruisin’ Canines, and you and your fellow members will be severely disciplined unless you tell us why you brought us here.” “We didn’t bring you here, you took Tripper!” “We did not!” “Did too!” They both stare into each other’s eyes, as if they were peering into each other’s soul, trying to see their past, their struggles, their battles, and their love for their family. Even though it was just for a second, it feels like a lifetime as they get back to their feet. “Well,” Jolt began, “if you didn’t take Tripper, then where the heck is she?” “I don’t know,” Kinssin answered. Suddenly, he got an idea. “Maybe she was taken to the area where we came from.” “And where would that be?” As Kinssin tells Jolt the coordinates, Jolt gets an angry look on his face. “I thought you said you didn’t take her!” “What are you talking about?” “We’re standing on those coordinates!!!” “But...how is that possible...Wait! The time rip! What year is it?” Jolt looks a little confused. “It’s the year 2000…” Suddenly it dawns on him. “You mean you’re from a different time?!” Kinssin nods. “Exactly. We’re from 2029 to be exact.” “So, if you’re here, that means Tripper must be in the year 2029! We have to go get her!” “Is that possible?” Kinssin asked. A look of horror crosses Jolt’s face. “I don’t know! We destroyed the time machine already! Technically, you shouldn’t even have been brought here! We need to talk to the Master, but how do I know we can trust you?” “The Master? You mean the original Master? You know him?” “We’re his students. If you know about him, then you must be at least semi-trustworthy.” Kinssin ducks as Jamboree sends a shower of sparks his way. “Oh yeah, I forgot about them.” He turns to others and shouts, “Hey guys! Knock it off! There’s been a misunderstanding!” Heatwave looks skeptical. “Are you sure?” “I’m positive. Trust me, these guys are having just as many problems as we are. We need to report back to the school.” “He’s right. We need to sort things out before we make any hasty decisions,” Kinssin added. “Okay, so who are these guys?” Jamboree asked, hesitant to believe that these are the good guys. “We’re the Cruisin’ Canines,” Jack answered. “And you are?” “We’re Extreme,” Blaze answered. ---- October 15, 2029. Tripper is tied to a chair in a small room in Del’s hideout. She looks up as Del enters. He pulls up a chair and sits across from her. “I see you’re awake,” he said. “Who are you, and what do you want from me?” “My name is Del. You’re going to help me fulfill my plans.” “And just what are your plans?” “I’m going to use your powers to travel back in time, so that I may ensure that cano-mutants will rule the Earth.” “I can’t travel through time!” “Of course you can. You wouldn’t be here if you couldn’t.” “What are you talking about?” “It’s the year 2029. According to my associate, you’re from the year 2000.” “But...I...I can’t...I’m never going to see my brother or my friends again...” A tear glistens as it slides down her face. “You know,” Del said as he gently wiped it away, “when I was a pup, I had an owner. A young girl, very gentle and kind. I loved her. She was killed by men who were after her family. After that I was abandoned, left a stray to become a specimen for a human lab. That was the day I turned against humanity. You remind me of that girl. Maybe when I’m through, I’ll keep you around as my pet.” Del turns to leave, as Tripper begins to quietly sob. ---- A few moments later, Del enters the main room of his base. Von Erich is here, reviewing some historical documents on a computer. He turns as Del enters. “You know, there are no historical records of Extreme.” “I told you we had never heard of them,” Del said a bit angrily. “It would appear that something must have happened to them before they became widely known.” “Maybe.” Del sits down in a nearby chair. “Listen Von Erich, we need to talk. I know the plan is to use this girl to get to the past, where we can take over the earth, but are you sure the girl can do it?” “Of course she can. She got here, didn’t she?” “Yes, but what if it was just a fluke?” “Fool. I’m telepathic. I can go inside her mind and find exactly what happened. Then I can use my powers to tweak hers and cause her to open another portal.” “Will it hurt her?” “You’re too soft,” Von Erich snarled. “Yes, she will feel slight discomfort, but nothing lethal. Tell me, why do you worry about whether or not she will be harmed? After all, once we’ve achieved our goals, we’ll have to destroy her to make sure she doesn’t go back and change things.” “No. That wasn’t part of our deal.” “But surely you agree. All our hard work would be for nothing if she got lose.” Del is silent for a moment. “I do agree that she could destroy everything, but isn’t there a way for you to block her powers or something?” “I knew it! You are soft!” Von Erich said with a laugh. “I could block her powers, but there is no guarantee that they would stay blocked. While we need her now, she is still a threat to us in the long run.” “Agreed,” Del said. For now, anyways, Von Erich, he thought to himself. ---- October 15, 2000. Shepherd University is unusually active this morning. That’s because of the stir created by the five visitors who arrived the night before. After the Master checked out their story, the Cruisin’ Canines were given rooms and a hot meal, and told to rest. After a hot breakfast, the whole gang met in the conference room. Let’s just say that it wasn’t meant to hold so many people. “Get your elbow out of my rib cage!” Jamboree cried as Blaze shoved in to get to the table. “Excuse me,” the Master said. They all snapped to attention. “Would you all please calm down? I have news. I’m afraid that the time machine cannot be repaired. We know the parts necessary, but we have no idea how to assemble it.” “What?! But what about Tripper?” Jolt cried. “I’m afraid she can’t get back unless she can do it on her own,” the Master replied. “And unfortunately, that also means that the Cruisin’ Canines can’t return to their proper time either.” “So we’re stuck here in the past. That’s just great,” White Fang said. “Maybe I can go visit my great-grandparents.” Roughhouse tries to comfort them, as well as Jolt. “Hey, gang, we can’t give up hope. Tripper could always find a way back, and then you guys could go back, too.” Jamboree hugs Kinssin. “But until you do, you guys are welcome to stay here.” She turns to the others. “Right guys?” The Master answers. “Of course.” Jamboree brightens. “So, come on, guys. I’ll show you around the campus!” They head out, all except for Jolt, Roughhouse, and Kinssin. Roughhouse gives Jolt a hug before standing up. “I’ve got to go check in on Michael. Call me if you need anything.” She leaves, leaving Kinssin and Jolt alone. “Um..” Kinssin began, “I’m sorry about your sister.” “Thanks,” Jolt replied. “It seems this kinda stuff happens to my family a lot. You know, the whole ‘disappear and leave everyone thinking your dead’ routine. First, my mom; then my brother, Michael; and now Ana. Tell me something. Do we work all this stuff out in the future?” Actually, Kinssin thought to himself, you guys were never mentioned in the future. That can only mean that you were all killed before you became famous. But I can’t tell you that. “I can’t tell you without possibly jeopardizing the future.” “It’s okay, I understand.” “I really hope everything works out for you.” “Me, too. And I hope you guys can find a way back to your homes.” “Me too.” Suddenly, an alarm sounds throughout the school. The monitors against the far wall come to life, showing Von Erich, Del, and Tripper. “It’s Tripper...and Von Erich!” Jolt cried. “They’re back!” “We better get the others and get going!” Kinssin cried. ---- Del was still shocked by what he was seeing. “Where are we?” Del asked. “Why, we are in Los Angeles, in the year 2000,” Von Erich said with an evil smile. “Whoa, man!” Poco exclaimed. “In 2029, it is called El Neuvo-Futuro de Los Angeles or The New Future of the Angels, man.” It was true; the time travelers had arrived in an alley in Los Angeles (soon to be El Neuvo-Futuro de Los Angeles). Del glanced over to Von Erich and the rest of his crew, making sure that everyone had made it through. Del was ruthless, but he would hate for a fellow cano-mutant to be left behind. Kuros was holding Tripper’s restraints. She looked really tired. “Are you all right?” he asked her. She gave a slight nod, as she sagged in her restraints. He turned to Von Erich. “Are we in the right year?” “Yes. It worked. We’re free to take over now,” Von Erich said as he gave a sadistic laugh. “Fine, then let’s get to it,” Del said. “Kuros, stay with the girl. Make sure nothing happens to her. The rest of you, come with us.” Von Erich leads the group into the street, and suddenly all the cars just stop, as Von Erich’s good eye glows. He sweeps his hand, and the cars fly back. They slam into other cars behind them, but a path is cleared. They walk out into the intersection. “Attention, citizens,” Von Erich began. “The world is now ours!” The cops suddenly arrive on the scene and open fire on the group. Von Erich shields them from the bullets, and the Devil Dawgs proceed to disarm them. Cantos uses his super speed to take the guns, and Poco uses his super strength to bend the muzzles on the guns so that they’re useless. The cops flee in terror, instructing the citizens to run away. “You were right, Von Erich, this is great!” Cantos yelled over the screaming citizens. “Yeah, man,” added Poco, “this rocks!” Wendy laughed. “Just look at them run, like the little insects they are!” “Try pickin’ on us! We won’t run so easily!” a voice said. Suddenly, a bolt of electricity strikes the ground nearby. They look up to spot Jolt and Heatwave flying above them. Jolt is carrying Kinssin, and Heatwave is carrying Jamboree and White Fang. It had been Jamboree who spoke. High above them, the Turbo Rover is cruising over the city, with Belle and Laura as its pilots. And the Street Rover skids into view down the road, and it’s occupants leap out, since there are too many cars to reach the skirmish directly. Arelene, Jack, Blaze, Domino, Shepard, Roughhouse and Krystal begin to make their way through the chaos of the screaming people and the wrecked cars. “I was wondering when you would show up,” Von Erich said. “I’ve got a few surprises for you!” He draws a laser from behind and opens fire. Jolt barely evades the blast, dropping Kinssin the rest of the way to the ground. Kinssin lands on his feet, and immediately aims for the laser. Cantos is on him, however, and he gets nailed by a barrage of the Wolfhound’s fists. Nearby, Heatwave sets Jamboree and White Fang down, and then opens fire himself on Von Erich. His energy blast misses, instead obliterating a mailbox. Von Erich laughs and fires at him. It hits dead on, knocking him from the sky to land on the hood of a nearby car. Jamboree is having problems of her own, as Poco approaches her. “You’ve got a sassy mouth little girl!” “And you have buggy eyes, mutt!” “I DO NOT have buggy eyes!!!” Poco screams as he leaps at her. She’s ready for him, and sends up a barrage of sparks to blind him. He cries out and staggers backwards. White Fang takes the opportunity to hit him with an ice blast, knocking him against the wall. White Fang proceeds to freeze him to the wall. “That won’t hold him long if he’s really determined, but it’ll hurt a lot when he pulls free,” White Fang said. Suddenly, Wendy appears out of nowhere, right in front of White Fang. Jamboree shouted, “Fang, watch out!” White Fang quickly acts, forming an ice “clone” of himself, placing it between him and Wendy. Wendy attacks it smashing it to bits, and sending ice chips flying through the air. White Fang and Jamboree are blinded for a moment, and Wendy takes the opportunity to strike. She delivers a kick to White Fang’s chest, sending the Malamute into the wall of a nearby building. Jamboree gets her vision back, and attempts to blind her, as she did to Poco, but Wendy teleports out of range. Jamboree keeps firing at her, but Wendy is simply too quick. Meanwhile, Jolt is busy up above dodging laser fire from Von Erich. His laser took out Heatwave in one blast. Heatwave should have been able to absorb it, but it was simply too powerful. Which means I won’t have any better luck...but if I keep dodging, I’ll be too worn out to fight! Jolt thought. Below, Von Erich is too busy to notice that his allies have all been engaged with the enemy. Which is why he didn’t see the car that Roughhouse hurled in his direction. It slams into him, smashing him against another car. “Krystal!” Roughhouse called, “Check on Heatwave!” Shepard Jones arrives a minute later, and knocks Cantos for a loop, freeing a battered Kinssin. Cantos rolls away, and winds up on one knee. “So you wanna dance, huh?” Cantos asked. He and Shepard Jones take off at super speeds, moving too fast for the human eye to follow. They exchange blows as they race across the battlefield. Arelene notices that Wendy is distracted by Jamboree’s attacks. She crouches nearby and waits. Wendy suddenly teleports in front of her, and Arelene attacks, catching her in the kidney. Wendy shrieks and turns, locking up with Arelene. Del fires a shot across the battlefield, freeing Poco. He then turns and fires at the approaching Domino and Blaze. The blow would have struck Domino, but he uses his powers to alter probability to make the laser change trajectory. It instead strikes a nearby car. This would have been great, except the car was leaking fuel, and the laser blast causes it to explode. For a moment, the whole area is swallowed up in fire. ---- From the Turbo Rover above, Laura and Belle, two reserve members of Extreme, watch on in horror. Both young ladies are telepathic, and both are trying to scan for their friends with their powers. “Can you sense anything, Belle?” “I can’t make out a thing. Their thoughts are all jumbled, and a few of ‘em are barely conscious.” “I better go get the medical unit ready. We’re gonna need it.” “I can keep the plane circling.” Laura moves off toward the back of the Turbo Rover. Belle looks out over the billowing clouds of smoke. “I hope you guys are okay...” ---- The blast had freed Tripper. She had been able to get her restraints lose, and the guy guarding her, Kuros, had been knocked down by the blast. She would have been, too, except that she was already on the ground. She had to get away, she knew that. While this Del guy might not hurt her, Von Erich and those other cano-mutants had no such restraint. She wasn’t up to teleporting right now, and the street was thick with smoke. But there was no other way out of the alley, so she pulled off her jacket and held it across her mouth and nose. Then she ran out into the chaos. A few moments later, Kuros got to his feet and followed her. “Master Del’s gonna kill me for this...” ---- Jolt lay stunned on the ground. The blast had thrown him against a nearby wall, and then he had fallen to the ground. His blast must have set off that one gas tank, and the explosion caused a chain reaction with all the other wrecked cars, Jolt thought as he tried to sit up. I wonder if the others are okay? Nearby, he spotted Kinssin, who was also injured, but relatively okay. He crawled over to Kinssin and helped him sit up. “You okay?” “I’ve been better. The explosion didn’t help either. Are the others okay?” “I don’t know.” Kinssin sits up and looks around. “This destruction is terrible. We probably leveled three blocks!” “Don’t worry about the property damage. It can be fixed. Let’s just hope there were no people in those buildings.” “This is exactly what we didn’t want to happen. We could’ve drastically changed the future.” “Don’t think like that. I’m sure everything will be fine. Trust me, we’ll be a lot worse off if Von Erich wins here.” Suddenly, as if on cue, the clouds of smoke just roll back, and the flames die down. Von Erich is standing in the middle of the battlefield, and the smoke is rolling away from him, revealing the amount of damage the explosion caused. The others are scattered about, some slowly getting to their feet, others eerily still. “Speak of the devil,” Jolt said. He fires off a bolt of electricity at him, but it seems ineffective. “No way,” Kinssin gasped. “He should’ve been leveled by that blast just like the rest of us! This is incredible! He seems to be brimming over with power now.” “He just wasn’t showing his power before,” Jolt told him. “He could’ve done this the whole time.” From the other side of the battlefield, an injured Del looks on in horror. He never even hinted how powerful he truly was. He probably meant to betray me all along! I can’t have that! he thought. “Devil Dawgs! Get to your feet, and get Von Erich!” “Are you crazy?!” Poco shouted from not far away, where he was crawling from beneath the wreckage of a building. “You were too soft, Del, and too stupid to see it coming,” Von Erich said, as he hits Del with a bolt of pure psychic energy. Del cries out, and falls to his knees, but somehow remains conscious. “This is not good,” Jolt said to no one in particular. “Extreme!” he shouted. “If you can hear me, get to your feet and help out! It’s gonna take everything we have to stop him!” “You too Canines!” Kinssin called. “We have to stop him before he alters history!” Slowly, Roughhouse, Jamboree, Jack, White Fang, and all the others get to their feet. Von Erich simply sneers at them. “And what do you weaklings think you can do to me?” “Everyone!” Jolt called, “Hit him with everything you’ve got!” They all fired at the same time, some, like Kinssin and Jolt, using their powers, and others, like Jack and Roughhouse, using lasers. Even the Devil Dawgs join in. Von Erich staggers. “NO!” he cries out. “I can’t be beaten!” He pulls out another high-tech looking weapon. Jack recognizes it. “It’s a bomb!” Jack calls to the others. “Not another explosion!” Jamboree moaned. “Yeah, Heatwave’s hurt bad, and he can’t take another hit like that!” Krystal shouted. “No, you don’t understand!” Jack called. “If he uses that bomb, it will destroy everyone and everything in a ten mile radius!” “That’s right, kiddies!” Von Erich taunted. “And if you don’t back off, right now, I’m going to detonate it!” “But you’ll be killed, too!” Arelene shouted. “It doesn’t matter, as long as I take these kids with me!” “Kinssin,” Jolt whispered, “I think I can take the bomb and use my powers to hurl it safely into the atmosphere. But just in case, do me a favor and keep your fingers crossed.” Suddenly, Tripper emerges from the veil of smoke that still surrounds the area outside Von Erich’s influence. “Tripper?” Jolt cried out. Two things happen at once: Von Erich grabs Tripper, and he tosses the bomb. “Jolt, get the bomb,” Kinssin called as he leaps toward Von Erich. Jolt uses his powers to magnetize the bomb, and hurls it upward into the atmosphere. It zings by the Turbo Rover moving at incredible speeds before detonating in the upper atmosphere. Meanwhile, Kinssin punches Von Erich in the jaw just as he forces Tripper to open a portal. Von Erich staggers backwards, releasing Tripper. Kinssin grabs her and moves away, back toward Jolt. Del sees his opportunity to escape, and calls out to his allies, “Devil Dawgs, retreat!” The lot of them run through the portal, but Del turns back and looks straight at Tripper. She looks back and sees a sadness on his face, as if he is losing someone he deeply cares for. “I wish we could have met on better terms. Who knows? Maybe we’ll meet again. Until then...” With the glimmer of an unshed tear in his eyes, Del jumps through the portal behind the others. Von Erich cries out after them. “No! I will not be abandoned!” He leaps into the portal, just as Tripper closes it. His form appears outlined in greenish energy from Tripper’s portal. He appears to be in great pain, and he screams in agony, before disappearing completely. Kinssin looks horrified. “What happened to him?” he asked as he let Tripper get to her feet. “He leapt through as I closed the portal. I don’t think he made it to where he intended,” Tripper said with a shudder. “Where did he intend to go?” “Back to the year 2029. I glimpsed into his thoughts when he forced my powers, and I saw that he was planning to go to the future and rule then, while the rest of you were stuck in the past. But he didn’t make it. He got locked outside the time stream.” “Is he dead?” “Who knows? But he’s going to be gone for a long time.” Jolt runs over and throws his arms around Tripper. “You’re safe!” She hugs him back. “Thanks to this guy. Who are you anyways?” “This is Kinssin,” Jolt said. “I’ll fill you in later.” He turns to Kinssin. “I seriously owe you one, man. If it wasn’t for you, I really wouldn’t have seen my sister again.” “No problem, really,” Kinssin said. “Can we go home, now?” Tripper asked. ---- October 16, 2000. After fixings up their wounds and getting a good night’s rest, the whole gang is feeling much better. Aside from a few minor burns and some bruises, everyone is fine. And after a nice hot breakfast, everyone is in the Conference Room, saying their good-byes as Tripper prepares to send them home. Of course, Laura is helping her with her telepathic powers. “Well Kinssin,” Jolt said, “It’s been real. But it looks like it’s time for you guys to get going.” “Yeah, this has been one extraordinary journey,” Kinssin said. Jamboree hugs Kinssin. “Take care you guys. After all, you’re the Rovers of tomorrow. Oh, and if you see me in the future, be sure to say ‘hi’!” Kinssin blushes. “Sure thing.” “Tell your master,” the Master began, “that he has some good, good dogs on his side.” “Will do,” said Jack. They finish saying their good-byes and turn to Tripper. “Okay, if everyone’s ready, one time portal, courtesy of myself and Laura.” She concentrates and a green portal opens in the room. They start to go through, and Extreme waves good-bye to them, saying things like “Good luck” and “Take care.” When everyone was safely back in their proper year, Tripper closed the portal. “You know,” Blaze said, “I’m going to miss those guys.” “Yeah,” Krystal sighed. “It was fun to have new faces around.” “Who knows,” Tripper said, “maybe we’ll meet them again one day.” “I hope so,” Jamboree added. ---- October 16, 2029. A shimmering green portal opens on the streets of El Neuvo-Futuro de Los Angeles. The Cruisin’ Canines step out and look around. The city looks devastated by war. The buildings are crumbled and abandoned, and wrecked cars line the streets. “What...What happened?” Arelene stammered. “I don’t know,” Kinssin said. “According to my watch this is the right year,” Jack said. “But everything is different!” Kinssin looks to the ground to see a burned city sign. He picks it up and looks at the sing. The sign has the words “Cuidad do Angeles Infierno” on it. “This is what we feared most!” Kinssin said. “We’ve changed history!” From nearby, they hear a scream. The sudden scream makes Kinssin drop the sign. They look around and hear the scream again. “Over there!” Arelene shouted. They turn and race towards it, Shepard taking the lead with his super speed. He fins a Bulldog cano-mutant attacking a woman. He clocks the cano-mutant, and it falls to the ground unconscious. He looks over to the woman as the others arrive. She is wearing an old white T-shirt, black gloves, black sunglasses, tattered black jeans, and a black shoulder holster with two guns. Her hair is black and cut close to her head. She spots Kinssin, and immediately throws her arms around his neck. “Kinssin! Thank goodness it’s you! The real you!” She pulls back and looks at him. “It’s me, Jamboree!” “Jamboree? What happened?” Kinssin asked. “It’s a long story, but things have really gone wrong! Von Erich has taken over, and the world’s gone crazy! Only a few of us humans survive as free people. Kinssin, you have to help us!” “How?” White Fang asked. Jamboree gets a dire expression on her face. “We have to go back in time!” The CC’s just look at each other. To Be Continued?
